Buy Fabric Online in India: The Complete Guide

Buying fabric online has quietly become the norm in India - but the difference between a happy purchase and a disappointing one comes down to knowing what to check before you click. This guide walks through the whole process, from understanding how fabric is priced to making sure the metreage you order is the metreage you need.
Understand how fabric is sold online
Fabric is sold by the metre, and most stores price it per metre or per half-metre unit. When you buy fabric online, always confirm the unit: a listing that reads ₹499 may mean ₹499 per metre or per half metre. Look at the minimum order length too - many stores ask for a 1 metre minimum, then allow half-metre increments.
Width matters just as much. Indian dress fabrics are commonly 44 inches wide; premium silks and suitings often come at 58 inches. Wider fabric needs less length for the same garment, so compare width before comparing price.
What to look for in a listing
Real photographs
Look for photographs taken in daylight on the actual roll, not catalogue renders. A good store shows the weave close-up as well as the drape, so you can judge texture and fall before ordering.
Honest descriptions
The description should name the weave, the approximate weight or GSM, the width, and what the fabric suits. If a listing only says 'premium quality', that is a warning sign.
Stock and dispatch
Check whether the exact colourway you want is in stock and how quickly orders are dispatched. Same-day or next-day dispatch matters when you are buying fabric online for a wedding deadline.
Getting the length right
Measure twice, order once. A simple unstitched suit usually needs 2.5 to 3 metres of main fabric at 44 inches, plus lining and a dupatta if you want one. A kurta alone takes about 2 to 2.5 metres; a lehenga can need five metres or more depending on the flare.
If you are between two lengths, order the longer one. Most stores cut to the length you order, and running short at the tailor is the one mistake you cannot fix later.
Why a fabric store online can beat a local shop
A good fabric store online shows you the full range in one place - every colourway, every weave - without travelling between markets. You can compare cotton, chanderi, georgette and silk side by side, read care instructions, and reorder the same SKU months later for a matching piece.
The trade-off is that you cannot touch the fabric first. Order a metre of anything unfamiliar, test the drape at home, and then commit to the full length. It is the same trick experienced buyers use in wholesale markets.
