Georgette Fabric Online: Types, Weights and What to Make

Georgette is the fabric that made the saree modern: a fine, crinkled weave with a dull finish that drapes close to the body and forgives almost any silhouette. It is one of the easiest fabrics to buy online because it behaves predictably - once you know which weight you are ordering.
The weights you will see
60 GSM georgette
The light, airy weight - fluid, slightly sheer, perfect for layered and gathered styles. Needs a lining for fitted bodices.
80 GSM georgette
The heavier, more opaque weight. It holds pleats and structure better, and works unlined for most styles.
Satin georgette
Georgette woven with a satin face, so it catches light without losing the soft fall. The dressiest of the family.
What georgette is good for
Anything that needs movement: flared kurtas, anarkalis, layered sets, dupattas and sarees. It also takes embroidery, print and 4D dye finishes beautifully, which is why so many festive collections are built on it.
Buying georgette online
Check the GSM or the weight description - it is the single biggest difference between two fabrics both called georgette. Confirm the width and whether the listing price is per metre. If the fabric is sheer, plan for lining in the same order so the shades match.
Where to buy georgette by the metre
Saroj Ensemble stocks 60 GSM, 80 GSM and satin georgette by the metre, including a hand-dyed 4D Dye range, delivered across India. Buy fabric online or see the full range at our Mumbai fabric stores.
