Gifting Fabric: Ideas for Weddings, Festivals and Housewarmings

Fabric is one of India's oldest gifts - practical, personal and impossible to outgrow. Unlike clothes, it never needs a size; the recipient decides what it becomes. Here is how to gift it well.
Match the fabric to the occasion
- Wedding: a Banarasi silk or an embroidered dupatta in the family's palette.
- Diwali: gold-toned tissue, organza or a festive unstitched suit.
- Housewarming: a soft mulmul or cotton-silk set for everyday use.
- New baby: mulmul, the gentlest cotton there is.
How much fabric to gift
One metre makes a dupatta, a stole or a blouse - a safe, elegant amount. Two to three metres makes a full outfit. If you know the recipient's tailor, a two-metre length is the sweet spot between generous and presumptuous.
Buying fabric online as a gift
Order from a store that cuts to length and ships across India - useful when the recipient lives in another city. Ask for the fabric to be sent directly to them, and include the care note so they know how to look after it.
A simple wrap in tissue with a handwritten note is all the presentation a beautiful weave needs.
