Monsoon Fabric Care: Protecting Silk, Cotton and Chanderi

Mumbai monsoons are hard on fabric. Damp air encourages mildew, zari tarnishes, and colours can bleed in storage. A few habits keep a wardrobe intact from June to September.
Dry before you store
The single biggest mistake is putting fabric away even slightly damp. Air every piece for a few hours after wearing or washing, and never store anything that has been worn in the rain without drying it first.
Store to breathe
- Use cotton or muslin bags, never plastic - plastic traps moisture.
- Fold with acid-free tissue between embroidered layers.
- Keep neem or cedar sachets in the cupboard; they discourage insects naturally.
- Air the cupboard itself on dry days - leave doors open for an hour.
By fibre
Silk
Silk absorbs moisture and can spot. Store in muslin, never sealed, and dry-clean before the season if it has been worn.
Cotton
Cotton is the most forgiving - wash and dry thoroughly, then fold. Dark cottons should be stored away from light to protect the dye.
Chanderi and tissue
The lightest weaves crease and mark easily. Store flat, not hung, and press on low before wearing rather than after.
Zari and embroidery
Wrap zari pieces in tissue and keep them away from rubber bands and metal hangers, which stain over time.
If mildew appears
Act fast: air the piece in shade, brush the surface gently, and for washable cottons a cold wash with a mild detergent usually clears it. For silks and embroidered pieces, take it to a professional rather than risk the finish.
