Unstitched Suit Fabric Online: How to Buy the Right Length

An unstitched suit is the most flexible way to dress - you choose the silhouette, the tailor and the fit. The only real risk when you buy unstitched suit fabric online is metreage. Get that right and everything else is straightforward.
How much fabric a suit needs
A simple suit (kurta + bottom)
About 2.5 to 3 metres of 44-inch fabric covers a straight or A-line kurta with matching bottoms. Add half a metre if you are tall or want a longer kurta.
A full suit with dupatta
Plan 3.5 to 4.5 metres: the main length, plus 2 to 2.5 metres for a dupatta if you want it in the same fabric.
Flared and layered styles
Anarkalis, flared suits and layered sets can take five metres or more. The wider the flare, the more length you need - and wider fabric (58 inch) reduces the total.
What to check in an online listing
Confirm the width, the price unit (per metre or per half metre) and the minimum order length. Look for a photograph of the full width of the roll, not just a close-up, so you can judge how the print or embroidery repeats across the metre.
If you are matching a piece you already own, check the colour name and SKU and reorder the same code - colourways repeat between batches only if the store manages stock by SKU.
Matching pieces without a shop visit
When you buy fabric online for a suit, order the main fabric and any contrast together so they are cut from the same batch. For embroidery-heavy fabrics, ask for the repeat size if it is not listed - it decides how the motifs will sit on the kurta.
