Georgette GSM Guide: 60 vs 80 vs Satin

Two rolls can both be labelled georgette and behave nothing alike, and the number that explains why is the GSM. Grams per square metre tells you how heavy the cloth is, how sheer it will be and how it will drape, which is the single most useful thing to know before you buy fabric by the metre in any weight, plain or satin georgette.
This guide unpacks the three weights you will meet most often - 60 GSM, 80 GSM and satin georgette - and explains what each one is good for, so your next order matches the outfit you have in mind rather than the photograph alone.
Why GSM matters more than the name
GSM, or grams per square metre, measures the density of the weave. A 60 GSM georgette is fine and airy; an 80 GSM georgette is denser, more opaque and better at holding structure. Same name, different fabric, and the difference shows the moment you start cutting.
When you buy fabric by the metre online, the GSM is the number that predicts how the finished garment will behave. It decides whether you need a lining, how pleats will sit and whether the cloth feels luxurious or thin in the hand.
The three weights, explained
60 GSM georgette
The lightest of the family: fluid, slightly sheer and beautifully soft. It gathers and layers without bulk, which makes it a favourite for flared kurtas, ruffles, layered anarkalis and summer dupattas.
It needs a lining for fitted bodices, and it asks for a gentle hand at the tailor because it can shift while being cut. Pinned carefully, though, it gives the softest movement of any weight.
80 GSM georgette
The heavier weight holds pleats, sleeves and structure far better, and it is opaque enough to wear unlined in most styles. If you want a saree that stays where you pin it, this is the weight to choose.
It is the safer choice when you buy fabric by the metre for an outfit you intend to keep for years, since it resists the sagging that lighter weaves eventually develop. It takes embroidery and sequin work without distorting.
Satin georgette
Satin georgette is woven with a satin face, so it catches light without losing the soft fall. It is the dressiest of the three, and the one most often chosen for festive suits, blouses and evening wear where a quiet shine is welcome.
What georgette is good for
Anything that needs movement: anarkalis, layered sets, drapey sarees, dupattas and gathered sleeves. The crinkled surface hides minor creasing, which makes it a forgiving fabric to wear through a long day or a long function.
It also takes print, embroidery and dye finishes exceptionally well, which is why so many festive collections are built on a georgette base rather than silk or cotton. If you want shine and softness in one cloth, satin georgette is usually the answer.
Before you add to cart
- The GSM or weight description, stated clearly.
- The width of the roll, usually 44 inches.
- Whether the shade needs a matching lining.
- The price unit: per metre or per half metre.
- Care notes, since lighter weights crease differently.
Lining and silhouette
To line or not to line
As a rule, 60 GSM needs a lining for anything fitted, 80 GSM does not, and the satin face depends on the colour - pale shades show through more. Order the lining with the main fabric, and buy fabric by the metre for both in one go so the dye lots match.
Matching drape to silhouette
Flowy styles want the light weight, structured styles want the heavier one, and evening wear usually wants the satin face. Match the drape to the silhouette before you buy fabric by the metre, and the tailoring will fall into place.
Prices across the weights
Price usually climbs with GSM and with the finish. A plain 60 GSM sits at the affordable end, 80 GSM costs a little more, and satin georgette carries a premium for its lustre, so weigh the upgrade against how often you will wear the outfit.
Compare weight before you compare price. A cheap roll of unknown GSM is not a bargain if it needs a lining, sags after a season, or arrives thinner than the photograph promised, which is why the clearest fabric by the metre listings always publish the weight up front.
